How to buy HYPE

The direct route is Hyperliquid's own spot order book. Here's how to use it and check you're buying the real token.

Short answer

Deposit USDC to Hyperliquid, open the HYPE/USDC spot market, and place a buy of at least $10. Spot fees at the entry tier are 0.070% taker and 0.040% maker; check the token's full name is "Hyperliquid" (token index 150) before you buy.

What HYPE is

HYPE is the native token of the Hyperliquid blockchain. Hyperliquid’s docs describe it as the token used to secure the network through staking, to pay gas on the HyperEVM (Hyperliquid’s smart-contract side), and to earn trading fee discounts when staked. This guide is about how to buy it safely; it says nothing about whether you should. We don’t make price calls.

The fastest route: Hyperliquid spot

Hyperliquid runs its own spot order book, so you can buy HYPE directly with USDC on the same app you’d use for perps.

Step 1: Get USDC onto Hyperliquid

Set up an account (wallet or email) and, before your first trade, enter a referral code on the Referrals page for 4% off fees (our code). Then deposit USDC. The minimum USDC deposit is 5 USDC; smaller deposits are lost.

You can also deposit other assets (BTC, ETH, SOL and more via Unit) and sell them for USDC first. See deposit Bitcoin and bridge from Solana.

Step 2: Make sure USDC is in the right balance

Depending on your account mode, Hyperliquid may hold separate perps and spot balances. In “unified account” mode, which Hyperliquid’s docs recommend for most users, your USDC is one balance used for both perps and spot. In the older standard mode, you may need to transfer USDC from your perps balance to your spot balance before you can buy.

Step 3: Open the right market

Use the token selector on the Trade page and switch to spot. Choose HYPE/USDC.

HYPE trades in four spot pairs, all against the same token (Hyperliquid API, 4 Nov 2026):

PairQuote asset
HYPE/USDCUSDC (the one most people use)
HYPE/USDT0USDT0
HYPE/USDHUSDH
HYPE/USDeUSDe

Check you’re buying the real token. Hyperliquid’s spot market is permissionless: anyone can deploy a token, and names can look alike. The real HYPE has the full name “Hyperliquid” and token index 150 in Hyperliquid’s spot metadata. Tokens such as kHYPE (“Kinetiq Staked HYPE”) and stHYPE (“Staked HYPE”) are different tokens issued by liquid staking projects, not HYPE itself. If a market’s details don’t show the Hyperliquid token, don’t buy it.

Step 4: Place the order

  • Market order: fills immediately at the best available price; you pay the taker fee (0.070% at tier 0).
  • Limit order: you set the price; if it rests on the book before filling, you pay the maker fee (0.040% at tier 0).

The minimum spot transaction is $10. Click Place Order and confirm.

Step 5: Check your balance

Your HYPE appears in the Balances table on the Trade and Portfolio pages as a spot balance on HyperCore (Hyperliquid’s trading layer).

What it costs

Buy sizeTaker (0.070%)Taker with referral (4% off)Maker (0.040%)
$100$0.07$0.067$0.04
$1,000$0.70$0.672$0.40
$10,000$7.00$6.72$4.00

Spot fee tiers fall as your 14-day volume grows, and spot volume counts double toward your tier. Compare scenarios in the fee calculator.

Spot HYPE vs the HYPE perp

On the same app you’ll also see a HYPE perpetual. It is not the same thing:

Spot HYPEHYPE perp
What you holdHYPE tokensA contract tracking HYPE’s price
LeverageNoneUp to 10x
Can be liquidatedNoYes
Can stake or withdraw itYesNo
Ongoing costNoneHourly funding payments

If you want to own HYPE, use spot. The perp is for leveraged trading; see your first perp trade.

What you can do with HYPE after buying

  • Stake it. Move HYPE from your spot balance to your staking balance and delegate to a validator. Staking has a 1-day lockup per delegation and a 7-day queue to move HYPE back to spot. Full steps: how to stake HYPE. Staked HYPE also earns trading fee discounts (5% from more than 10 HYPE up to 40% above 500,000).
  • Use it on the HyperEVM. HYPE pays for gas on the HyperEVM. Use “Transfer to/from EVM” to move it across; see moving funds between HyperCore and HyperEVM.
  • Withdraw it. If you plan to send HYPE to an exchange, read the next section first.

Sending HYPE to or from an exchange

HyperCore (where spot trading happens) and the HyperEVM are two separate parts of the same blockchain. Hyperliquid’s docs warn that some centralized exchanges support HYPE on HyperCore spot but not on the HyperEVM, or the other way round. Confirm which one your exchange supports, and send a small test amount the first time. Never use Hyperliquid’s “Send” feature to send to an exchange address unless the exchange explicitly supports Hyperliquid; Send only moves funds between Hyperliquid accounts.

More in depositing from a centralized exchange.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a lookalike token. Check for the full name “Hyperliquid” and token index 150.
  • Buying the perp by accident. Make sure the spot tab is selected; the perp shows leverage and a liquidation price, spot doesn’t.
  • Leaving USDC in the wrong balance (standard mode). Transfer to spot first.
  • Sending HYPE to the wrong network at an exchange. HyperCore and HyperEVM are not interchangeable.

If something goes wrong

  • The order won’t submit. Check it’s at least $10 and that you have USDC available in spot.
  • I can’t sell a tiny leftover amount. Each spot token has a minimum lot size set by its deployer; very small balances may be below it.
  • I moved HYPE to the HyperEVM by mistake. It isn’t lost. Move it back with “Transfer to/from EVM” (you need a little HYPE on the EVM for gas).

Questions people ask

Where can I buy HYPE?

The most direct place is Hyperliquid's own spot market at app.hyperliquid.xyz, where HYPE trades against USDC, USDT0, USDH and USDe (Hyperliquid API, 4 Nov 2026). Some centralized exchanges also list it; check each one's terms and withdrawal networks.

Is buying HYPE on spot the same as trading the HYPE perp?

No. A spot buy gives you HYPE tokens you can hold, stake or withdraw. The HYPE perp is a leveraged contract (up to 10x) that tracks the price; you never hold the token, and it can be liquidated.

What is the fee to buy HYPE on Hyperliquid?

At the entry tier, spot fees are 0.070% taker and 0.040% maker, so a $100 market buy costs $0.07. A referral code takes 4% off that on your first $25M of volume.

What's the minimum amount of HYPE I can buy?

Hyperliquid's support docs give a $10 minimum transaction for spot. Very small leftover balances can be hard to sell because each token has a minimum lot size.
