How to stake HYPE

Native staking takes three clicks and one week to undo. Here is exactly what happens to your HYPE at each step.

Short answer

Move HYPE from your Spot balance to your Staking balance (instant), then delegate it to a validator (1-day lockup). Getting it back takes two separate actions: undelegate, then transfer Staking to Spot, which sits in a 7-day queue. The docs give a reward rate of about 2.37% a year at 400M HYPE staked; with 439.4M staked on 4 Nov 2026 the same formula gives roughly 2.26%.

What staking HYPE actually does

Hyperliquid is a proof-of-stake blockchain. Validators run the network, and HYPE holders delegate (lend their stake weight to) a validator they trust. In return you earn a share of new HYPE paid out from the future emissions reserve, and, if you trade, a lower trading fee.

Native staking happens inside HyperCore, the trading side of Hyperliquid. Your HYPE moves between three balances on the same address:

BalanceWhat it isMoving inMoving out
SpotWhere HYPE sits after you buy it—Instant to Staking
StakingHYPE ready to delegate or just undelegatedInstant from Spot7-day queue back to Spot
DelegatedHYPE staked to a validatorFrom Staking1-day lockup, then instant back to Staking

Nothing leaves your wallet’s control; it is the same address throughout. Hyperliquid’s docs use “stake” and “delegate” to mean the same thing.

Before you start

  • You need HYPE in your Spot balance on HyperCore. If you don’t have any yet, see how to buy HYPE.
  • If your HYPE is on the HyperEVM (for example in a wallet like Rabby on chain 999), move it to HyperCore first. See moving funds between HyperCore and HyperEVM.
  • Use an official site. The docs list four places to stake: app.hyperliquid.xyz/staking, stake.nansen.ai, app.validao.xyz and hypurrscan.io/staking. Check the address bar against our official links before you connect.

How to stake HYPE, step by step

  1. Open the staking page at app.hyperliquid.xyz/staking and connect the wallet that holds your HYPE.
  2. Transfer HYPE from Spot to Staking. This is instant. Your HYPE is not earning anything yet.
  3. Choose a validator and delegate. Pick one from the list and stake to it. A delegation is locked for 1 day. You can stake to as many validators as you like.
  4. Check it shows up. Your delegated balance should appear against the validator you chose. Rewards build up every minute and are paid daily.

That’s it. Rewards are automatically re-staked to the same validator, so they compound without you doing anything.

How rewards work

The docs describe a reward rate inspired by Ethereum’s: it is inversely proportional to the square root of the total HYPE staked. Their reference point is about 2.37% a year at 400M HYPE staked.

The info API showed about 439.4M HYPE staked across all validators (Hyperliquid API, 4 Nov 2026, 07:28 UTC). Plugging that into the same formula gives roughly 2.26% a year, before your validator’s commission. Treat that as an estimate derived from the docs, not a figure Hyperliquid publishes. It moves as total stake moves: more HYPE staked means a lower rate for everyone.

Other details that matter:

  • Commission. Validators can charge delegators a commission. A validator cannot raise its commission unless the new rate is 1% or lower, so a validator can’t attract stake at 0% and then jump to 20%.
  • Minimum balance rule. Rewards for each staking epoch (100,000 rounds, about 90 minutes) are based on the smallest amount you had staked during that epoch. Staking halfway through an epoch earns from the next one.
  • Jailed validators earn nothing. Validators can vote to jail a peer that responds too slowly. While jailed, it produces no rewards for its delegators. Jailing is not slashing: your stake isn’t cut.
  • Slashing. The docs say there is currently no automatic slashing. Slashing is reserved for provably malicious behaviour such as double-signing.

The API listed 35 validators, 27 of them active at the same snapshot. A validator needs 10,000 HYPE of its own stake to be active; if it drops below that, it stops accepting new delegations.

The trading fee discount

Staked HYPE also lowers your trading fees on perps, HIP-3 markets and spot:

TierHYPE stakedFee discount
Wood>105%
Bronze>10010%
Silver>1,00015%
Gold>10,00020%
Platinum>100,00030%
Diamond>500,00040%

This stacks with the 4% referral discount. Work out what both are worth for your volume with the fee calculator.

How to unstake (two separate actions)

This is where most people get stuck. Unstaking is two steps, and the 7-day clock only starts at the second one.

  1. Undelegate from the validator. Once the 1-day lockup has passed, the HYPE returns to your Staking balance instantly.
  2. Transfer from Staking to Spot. This enters the 7-day unstaking queue. It finishes exactly 7 days later and can’t be sped up.

The docs give this example: start a 100 HYPE Staking-to-Spot transfer at 08:00:00 UTC on March 11 and a 50 HYPE transfer at 09:00:00 UTC on March 12. The first lands at 08:00:01 UTC on March 18, the second at 09:00:01 UTC on March 19.

Each address can have at most 5 pending withdrawals in the queue at once.

Staking from one wallet, trading from another

If you keep your staked HYPE in one wallet and trade from another, you can link them so the staking wallet’s HYPE counts toward the trading wallet’s fee discount. Read this carefully before you do it:

  • Linking is permanent. Unlinking isn’t supported.
  • The staking account can take everything in the trading account in a single, irreversible transaction. The docs say a trading user “should never link to a staking user that is controlled by another user.”
  • The staking account stops getting its own staking discount once linked.
  • The trading account sends the first action and the staking account finalises it (“Link Staking” on the Portfolio page).

If you trade and stake from the same address, you don’t need to do anything. If anyone asks you to link your trading account to their staking account, it’s a scam: see Hyperliquid scams to avoid.

Liquid staking: the other route

Third-party protocols on the HyperEVM offer liquid staking: you deposit HYPE and get a token back (for example Kinetiq’s kHYPE or stHYPE) that you can trade or use elsewhere while the underlying HYPE is staked. DefiLlama listed Kinetiq kHYPE at about $872M and stHYPE at about $193M of deposits on 4 Nov 2026.

These are independent projects, not part of Hyperliquid’s native staking. They add smart-contract risk and their own redemption rules, and their token can trade away from the value of the HYPE behind it. Read each project’s own docs; we don’t recommend one over native staking.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting 7 days after undelegating only. The queue starts when you transfer Staking to Spot, not when you undelegate. Check you did both.
  • Staking HYPE that’s still on the HyperEVM. It has to be in your HyperCore Spot balance first.
  • Choosing a validator on commission alone. A jailed validator pays nothing, whatever its commission. Look at whether it’s active.
  • Hitting the 5-withdrawal limit. Batch your unstaking instead of queuing many small transfers.
  • Linking to someone else’s account. Never.

If something goes wrong

  • Unstaked HYPE hasn’t arrived after 7 days: confirm on the Portfolio page that a Staking-to-Spot transfer was actually started, then count 7 days from that timestamp.
  • Can’t find your HYPE: check all three balances (Spot, Staking, delegated) and the HyperEVM.
  • Still stuck: open a ticket in Hyperliquid’s Discord “open-ticket” channel. Ignore anyone who DMs you offering help.

Questions people ask

How long does it take to unstake HYPE?

After you undelegate from a validator, the transfer from your Staking balance back to your Spot balance takes exactly 7 days and cannot be sped up. Undelegating itself is instant once the 1-day delegation lockup has passed.

What is the HYPE staking APR?

Hyperliquid's docs say the reward rate is about 2.37% a year at 400M HYPE staked and falls with the square root of total stake. With about 439.4M HYPE staked on 4 Nov 2026 that works out to roughly 2.26% before validator commission. This is our estimate from the published formula, not a quoted rate.

Can staked HYPE be slashed?

The docs say there is currently no automatic slashing. Validators can be jailed for poor performance, which stops rewards for their delegators but is not the same as slashing.

Does staking HYPE lower my trading fees?

Yes. Staking more than 10 HYPE gives a 5% fee discount, rising to 40% above 500,000 HYPE. It applies to the address that stakes, or to a trading address you link to it.
