Validators and HYPE staking

What you earn, what you lock up, and what you are trusting when you stake HYPE.

Short answer

Staking HYPE means delegating it to one of Hyperliquid's validators to help secure the chain; on 4 November 2026 validators showed predicted rewards of about 2.1%–2.2% a year, with about 439.4M HYPE staked across 27 active validators. Delegations lock for 1 day, moving HYPE out of staking takes a 7-day queue, and staking also cuts your trading fees by 5% to 40%.

Hyperliquid is a proof-of-stake chain: the validators who run HyperBFT consensus get influence in proportion to the HYPE staked with them. Hyperliquid only supports delegated proof-of-stake, so “stake” and “delegate” mean the same thing here. You don’t run a server; you assign your HYPE to a validator who does, and you share its rewards.

Staking happens inside HyperCore. Just as USDC moves between your perps and spot balances, HYPE moves between your spot account and your staking account. For the button-by-button walkthrough, see how to stake HYPE.

The docs’ own example: start a staking-to-spot transfer of 100 HYPE at 08:00:00 UTC on 11 March, and it finalizes at 08:00:01 UTC on 18 March.

How rewards are set

The reward rate is modeled on Ethereum’s: it’s inversely proportional to the square root of total HYPE staked. More stake means a lower rate for everyone. The docs give about 2.37% a year at 400M HYPE staked. On 4 November 2026 about 439.4M was staked, and the API’s predicted APRs for active validators ran from 2.07% to 2.24%, the spread coming mainly from different commissions.

Commission rule. A validator can’t raise its commission unless the new rate is 1% or lower. That stops a validator from attracting stake at a low rate and then hiking it.

The validator set, as of 4 November 2026

From the Hyperliquid API (validatorSummaries) at 07:27 UTC: 35 registered, 27 active, 6 jailed. The docs say the active set is the top 27 by stake. Largest ten by stake:

The five Hyper Foundation validators together held about 208.2M HYPE, roughly 47% of all stake. Other names in the active set included Kinetiq x Hyperion, Bitwise, Hyperdash and ASXN. Hyperliquid Strategies, the Nasdaq-listed HYPE treasury company, co-runs the fourth-largest validator (more on that).

Becoming a validator

Running a node is permissionless. To become active, a validator needs a 10,000 HYPE self-delegation, locked for one year; if self-delegation drops below that, it enters undelegate-only mode. The Hyper Foundation’s separate delegation program adds KYC/KYB, at least two public non-validator nodes, and excludes restricted jurisdictions including the US and Ontario.

Staking and trading fees

Staked HYPE lowers your trading fees across perps, HIP-3 perps and spot:

TierHYPE stakedFee discount
Wood>105%
Bronze>10010%
Silver>1,00015%
Gold>10,00020%
Platinum>100,00030%
Diamond>500,00040%

This stacks with a referral code (4% off your first $25M of volume). If you stake and trade from the same address, nothing else is needed.

Staking linking, a warning. You can link a separate “staking user” to a “trading user” so the stake counts toward the trader’s discount. The docs are explicit that linking is permanent, and that the staking user can unilaterally sweep all funds from the trading user in one irreversible transaction. Only link two addresses you control yourself.

Why it matters to you

  • Modest, variable yield. About 2.2% a year in HYPE, falling as more HYPE is staked. Your return in dollars depends on HYPE’s price.
  • You can’t exit fast. The 1-day lock plus 7-day queue means at least a week before staked HYPE is sellable on HyperCore.
  • Fee discounts can be worth more than the yield if you trade actively.
  • Your choice shapes the network. Stake is concentrated; picking a smaller, reliable validator spreads it.

What can go wrong

  • Price risk during the queue. HYPE can move a lot in the 7 days it takes to unstake.
  • Jailed validators earn nothing. Check status; if your validator is jailed, rewards stop until it unjails.
  • Liquid staking adds risk. Tokens like kHYPE or stHYPE let you exit faster on a market, but add smart-contract and depeg risk, and their pricing can drift from HYPE.
  • Linking to someone else’s address gives them control of your trading account’s funds.
  • Phishing. Stake only through app.hyperliquid.xyz or an interface you’ve verified on our official links page.

Questions people ask

What is the HYPE staking APR?

On 4 November 2026 the validatorSummaries endpoint showed predicted APRs between about 2.07% and 2.24% for active validators, after their commission. The docs set the base reward rate inversely proportional to the square root of total stake: about 2.37% a year at 400M HYPE staked, so rewards fall as more HYPE is staked.

How long does it take to unstake HYPE?

Two steps. Undelegating from a validator is instant once the 1-day delegation lockup has passed. Moving HYPE from your staking account back to spot then takes 7 days, and each address can have at most 5 withdrawals pending.

Can I lose HYPE by staking?

The docs say there is currently no automatic slashing. Validators that perform badly get jailed, and a jailed validator earns no rewards for its delegators. The main risks are the 7-day exit delay and HYPE's own price moves. Liquid-staking tokens add smart-contract risk on top.

Does staking HYPE lower my Hyperliquid trading fees?

Yes. Staking more than 10 HYPE gives a 5% fee discount, rising to 40% above 500,000 HYPE. The discount stacks with a referral code discount.

Which validator should I stake with?

Look at commission, uptime and whether the validator is jailed, and avoid concentrating further on the largest validators. The staking docs stress that delegating only to trusted validators is every staker's responsibility, because consensus assumes more than two-thirds of stake is honest.
