The HYPE token
Hyperliquid's native token: what it's for, where the supply sits, and what changes it.
HYPE is Hyperliquid's native token, with a 1 billion maximum supply, launched on 29 November 2024. On 4 November 2026 the Hyperliquid API counted about 301.7M HYPE as circulating, ~439M staked with validators, ~48.65M in the Assistance Fund and ~410M reserved for future emissions. HYPE secures the chain through staking, pays HyperEVM gas, cuts trading fees and backs HIP-3 market deployers.
HYPE is the native token of the Hyperliquid blockchain. Its genesis was 29 November 2024 (the API’s deployTime reads 2024-11-29 06:45 UTC), with a hard cap of 1 billion tokens. Unlike many exchange tokens, HYPE has jobs inside the protocol itself: it secures consensus, pays gas and is the stake that market deployers put at risk.
What HYPE is used for
| Use | How it works |
|---|---|
| Securing the chain | Holders delegate HYPE to validators. Block production and voting power follow stake. See validators and staking. |
| Trading fee discounts | Staking more than 10 HYPE cuts your fees 5%; the discount rises to 40% above 500,000 HYPE staked. |
| Gas | HYPE is the gas token on the HyperEVM, and HIP-1 token deployments pay their auction gas in HYPE. |
| Market deployer bonds | HIP-3 perp deployers must stake 500,000 HYPE, slashable if they misbehave. Permissionless quote assets need 200,000. |
| Collateral | Under portfolio margin, HYPE counts as collateral with a loan-to-value of 0.65. |
| Buybacks | The Assistance Fund converts trading fees into HYPE automatically. |
| Gas on Elysium | Kinetiq’s Elysium layer-2 also uses HYPE as its gas token. |
Where the supply sits (4 November 2026)
From the Hyperliquid info API, 07:27 UTC:
| Bucket | HYPE | Share of 1B |
|---|---|---|
| Circulating (API definition) | ~301.7M | ~30.2% |
| Reserved for future emissions | ~410.2M | ~41.0% |
One non-circulating address, 0x43e9…a251 | ~238.2M | ~23.8% |
Assistance Fund, 0xfefe…fefe | ~48.65M | ~4.9% |
| Already removed from total supply | ~1.2M | ~0.1% |
The 0x43e9…a251 balance is the same size as the 23.8% core-contributor allocation announced at genesis; the API doesn’t label it. Staked HYPE (~439M across 35 validators) overlaps these buckets: staked tokens can be circulating or not.
The genesis allocation
Hyperliquid announced the following split before genesis (as reported by The Block, 28 November 2024):
- 31.0% genesis distribution to users (the airdrop), unlocked at launch
- 38.888% future emissions and community rewards
- 23.8% current and future core contributors, locked for one year after genesis, then vesting, with most schedules completing in 2027 to 2028
- 6.0% Hyper Foundation budget
- 0.3% community grants
- 0.012% HIP-2 (Hyperliquidity) allocation
The development team took no venture funding, per Hyperliquid’s docs, so there are no VC allocations.
What changes the supply
- Unlocks add to circulation. Since the core-contributor lock ended in late November 2025, contributor tokens can vest into circulation over time.
- Staking rewards add new tokens. They come from the future-emissions reserve. The rate falls as total stake rises: about 2.37% a year at 400M staked, per the docs.
- Buybacks remove tokens from use. Fees bought back into the Assistance Fund are treated as burned.
- Small burns. HyperEVM burns base and priority gas fees, and some spot fees are burned; this is part of why the API’s total supply is about 1.2M below 1B.
Why it matters to you
- If you trade, staking can lower your fees. Even 100 HYPE staked gives a 10% discount, which stacks with a referral code.
- If you hold, read supply figures carefully. “Circulating” differs by source depending on how they treat the Assistance Fund and locked tokens.
- If you stake, you take validator risk. Choose validators carefully; see the staking guide.
What can go wrong
- Price risk. HYPE is volatile. Nothing about buybacks or staking prevents large drawdowns.
- Unlock pressure. Contributor vesting and emissions add supply on schedules that aren’t fully public.
- Fake tokens. Many tokens use “HYPE” in their name on other chains. On Hyperliquid, the canonical HYPE spot token has token ID
0x0d01dc56dcaaca66ad901c959b4011ec. - Unstaking takes 7 days. Staked HYPE sits in a 7-day queue before it’s spendable again.
- US access. Hyperliquid’s terms restrict the United States and some other places; US investors more commonly get exposure through HYPE ETFs.
Questions people ask
What is the total supply of HYPE?
The maximum supply is 1,000,000,000 HYPE. The Hyperliquid API's totalSupply field read about 998.8M on 4 November 2026, and its circulatingSupply field about 301.7M. Hyperliquid's docs treat HYPE in the Assistance Fund (~48.65M) as burned, which is why some sites show lower totals.
When do HYPE tokens unlock?
Per Hyperliquid's genesis announcement as reported at launch, core-contributor tokens (23.8% of supply) were locked for one year after the 29 November 2024 genesis, then vest over time, with most schedules finishing in 2027 to 2028. Hyperliquid has not published an exact per-month schedule in its docs, so treat third-party unlock calendars as estimates.
How much do you earn staking HYPE?
Staking rewards come from the future-emissions reserve and fall as more HYPE is staked; the docs give about 2.37% a year at 400M staked. With ~439M staked on 4 November 2026, validators' predicted APRs were about 2.1% to 2.2% after commission.
How do I buy HYPE?
On Hyperliquid itself, deposit USDC and buy HYPE on the HYPE/USDC spot market. Several centralized exchanges also list HYPE, and US investors can get exposure through spot HYPE ETFs. Check the canonical HYPE token, since several spot pairs and many lookalike tickers exist.
What is the HYPE price?
It changes every second. At 07:27 UTC on 4 November 2026 the HYPE perp mark price was about $85.15. We don't make price predictions; see our markets page for the live figure.
