Hyperliquid liquidation price calculator

Hyperliquid's own liquidation formula, with live mark prices and margin tiers for every market.

Short answer

Hyperliquid liquidates a position when its equity falls below the maintenance margin, half the initial margin at the market's max leverage: 1.25% of position value on BTC (40x max), 5% on a 10x-max market. A 10x isolated BTC long is liquidated about 8.86% below entry; at BTC's 2026-11-05 12:21 UTC mark of $80,128.00 that is $73,028.05.

Implements the formula on Hyperliquid's liquidations page, with margin tiers from the live API. It models one position; in cross margin your other positions' profits and losses move the real liquidation price. Fees and funding are ignored. Runs in your browser; nothing you type is sent to UnderHyper.

The formula

Hyperliquid publishes the exact formula on its liquidations page:

liq_price = price − side × margin_available / position_size / (1 − l × side)
  • side is 1 for a long and −1 for a short.
  • l = 1 / maintenance leverage. Maintenance leverage is twice the market's max leverage, so maintenance margin is half the initial margin at max leverage: BTC (40x) needs 1/80 = 1.25%, a 20x market 2.5%, a 10x market 5%.
  • margin_available (isolated) = the margin you put behind the position − maintenance margin required.
  • margin_available (cross) = your account value − maintenance margin required.

Two things follow. In cross margin the leverage setting does not move the liquidation price; it only sets how much collateral the position ties up. And when you don't have enough margin to open the trade, Hyperliquid's estimate assumes the account is topped up to the initial margin, which this calculator does too.

Worked example

A long of 1 BTC at an illustrative $100,000, 10x isolated:

Position value1 × $100,000 = $100,000.00
Isolated margin (value / leverage)$100,000 / 10 = $10,000.00
Maintenance margin (l = 1/80)$100,000 / 80 = $1,250.00
margin_available$10,000.00 − $1,250.00 = $8,750.00
Liquidation price100,000 − 1 × 8,750 / 1 / (1 − 0.0125) = $91,139.24
Distance from entry-8.86%

The same long in cross margin with $5,000 of account value: margin_available = $5,000 − $1,250 = $3,750, so the liquidation price is 100,000 − 3,750 / 0.9875 = $91,139.24 (-8.86%). With less money behind the position, it sits much closer. A 10x isolated short at $100,000 is liquidated at 100,000 + 8,750 / 1.0125 = $108,641.98 (+8.64%).

Margin tiers

Big positions need more maintenance margin. Hyperliquid's margin tiers lower the max leverage above a position size, and the maintenance rate rises with it: BTC allows 40x up to $150M of position value and 20x above; ETH 25x up to $100M, then 15x. The calculator reads each market's tiers from the live meta response and applies the tier that the position falls in at the liquidation price, with the documented maintenance deduction that keeps margin continuous between tiers. Below those sizes, which covers almost every retail position, a single rate applies.

What can go wrong

  • The price can gap through your level. Liquidation closes the position with market orders; in a fast move you can be filled worse than the liquidation price.
  • Backstop liquidation keeps your maintenance margin. If equity falls below two thirds of maintenance before the book absorbs the position, the liquidator vault (part of HLP) takes it over and the maintenance margin is not returned.
  • Mark price, not last trade. Liquidations use the mark price, which blends other exchanges' prices with Hyperliquid's book. Watch the mark, not just the chart.
  • Cross positions share one fate. In cross margin a loss on one position pulls every cross position's liquidation price closer. Isolated margin caps the damage to the margin you assign.
  • Funding and fees count. Funding is paid every hour and fees come off your balance, so a position held for weeks drifts toward its liquidation price even if the market doesn't move. See the funding calculator.

Perps are leveraged: you can lose your whole margin quickly. Hyperliquid's terms restrict users in the US, Ontario and other places; see is Hyperliquid available in the US. Questions people ask

How is the liquidation price calculated on Hyperliquid?

Hyperliquid documents it as liq_price = price − side × margin_available / position_size / (1 − l × side), where side is 1 for a long and −1 for a short, l = 1 / maintenance leverage, and margin_available is your isolated margin (or cross account value) minus the maintenance margin.

What is the maintenance margin on Hyperliquid?

Half of the initial margin at the market's max leverage. BTC allows 40x, so its maintenance margin is 1/80 (1.25%) of position value; a 10x-max market needs 5%, and a 3x-max market 16.7%. Very large positions move into a higher margin tier (BTC above $150M uses 20x, so 2.5%).

Does leverage change the liquidation price in cross margin?

No. Hyperliquid's docs say the liquidation price of a cross position does not depend on the leverage you set; lower leverage just uses more collateral. In isolated margin it does, because leverage decides how much margin is put behind the position.

Which price triggers a liquidation on Hyperliquid?

The mark price, which combines external exchange prices with Hyperliquid's own order book, not the last trade. In fast markets the mark can differ from the book price you see.

What happens when I get liquidated on Hyperliquid?

Hyperliquid first sends market orders to the book to close the position (20% at a time for positions over $100,000) and you keep any margin left over. If equity falls below two thirds of the maintenance margin, the liquidator vault inside HLP takes the position over and the maintenance margin is not returned.
