Liminal (liminal.money)
Basis-trade yield, automated: how Liminal's hedged strategies earn, what they charge, who holds the keys, and what happens when funding turns negative.
Liminal runs automated delta-neutral strategies on Hyperliquid: it holds an asset in spot and shorts the same amount in perps to collect funding, either in your own account (Customized) or through tokenized xTokens and limUSD. Customized takes 10% of gross funding profits plus a 1 bp builder fee; xTokens charge a 10% performance fee and a 1% management fee.

What Liminal is
Liminal calls itself a native yield layer for Hyperliquid. Its strategies are delta-neutral: they hold an asset (or its staking token where one exists) in spot on HyperCore, Hyperliquid’s trading engine, and short the same amount in perps. Price moves on the two legs cancel out, so the position earns the funding rate that perp shorts collect when longs pay them, plus any staking yield. Liminal’s docs cite neutral funding averaging about 10.95% a year; actual funding changes every hour and can turn negative. See how funding rates work and the live funding data.
There are two product lines:
- Customized runs a strategy just for you, with the asset and leverage you choose. In Regular Mode, Liminal manages a dedicated wallet for you, with keys held in a secure enclave. In Self-Custody Mode, Liminal trades your own Hyperliquid sub-account as a trade-only API agent that cannot withdraw and that you can revoke.
- Tokenized pools deposits into xTokens (such as xHYPE, xBTC and xLEND, which lends stablecoins to money markets) and limUSD, a portfolio spread across xTokens and money markets. xTokens are LayerZero tokens with HyperEVM as the hub and copies on Arbitrum and Ethereum, priced by a NAV (net asset value) oracle.
DefiLlama lists Liminal Basis from July 26, 2025.
What it costs
| Product | Documented fee |
|---|---|
| Customized | 10% of gross funding profits, only when profitable after costs, plus a 1 bp builder fee per trade |
| xTokens | 10% performance fee and 1% management fee |
| limUSD | 10% performance fee on top of the underlying xTokens’ fees |
| Customized deposits and withdrawals (Hyperliquid, Arbitrum) | No protocol fee |
| Cross-chain via deBridge | 0.04% deBridge fee plus 0.02% Liminal fee |
A builder fee is an extra charge a front end adds to each Hyperliquid fill. Hyperliquid’s own trading fees go to Hyperliquid, not Liminal, and come on top. Run your own numbers in the fee calculator.
How to use it
- Go to liminal.money and choose Tokenized or Customized.
- Tokenized: connect a wallet and deposit a supported stablecoin (for example USDC or USDT0 for xHYPE) from HyperEVM, Arbitrum, Ethereum or your Hyperliquid balance. You receive an xToken or limUSD whose price per share rises as yield accrues.
- Customized: pick an asset and leverage, then Regular Mode or Self-Custody Mode. For Self-Custody, approve Liminal as an API agent on a sub-account.
- Redeem back to stablecoins in the app. Large or stressed redemptions may be staged or delayed.
Risks
- Funding risk. Returns depend on positive funding. Long negative stretches, or costs above yield, can push xToken value down. xTokens are not stablecoins.
- Auto-deleveraging. In extreme stress Hyperliquid can force-close profitable positions, which could close a hedge and leave one leg exposed.
- Contracts and bridges. xToken contracts and LayerZero cross-chain transfers carry smart-contract risk.
- Oracle. NAV is posted onchain by an oracle Liminal says is secured by a multisig and third-party guardians.
- Custody. Tokenized assets sit with custodians and multisigs Liminal doesn’t name in its docs. In Customized Regular Mode, Liminal holds the encrypted keys.
- Redemptions can be delayed, charged or paused under stress.
- Hyperliquid dependency. Downtime can pause rebalancing and withdrawals, and everything settles in USDC. Hyperliquid’s terms restrict the US and Ontario.
- Support scams. The team never DMs first; support is only through Discord tickets.
Audits: Spearbit and Pashov Audit Group reviewed the xToken contracts; the reports are on the audits page.
Who it suits, and alternatives
Liminal suits people who want funding-rate yield without running the hedge themselves and who understand it is not a fixed rate. For options-selling yield, see Rysk; for managed vaults, Hyperbeat; for staking yield on HYPE, Kinetiq; for lending stablecoins, Felix.

Questions people ask
What fees does Liminal charge?
Customized strategies pay 10% of gross funding profits, only when profitable after execution costs, plus a 1 basis point builder fee per trade. xTokens charge a 10% performance fee and a 1% management fee, and limUSD adds its own 10% performance fee on top.
Can Liminal withdraw my funds in Self-Custody Mode?
No. In Self-Custody Mode Liminal is approved only as a trade-only API agent on your Hyperliquid sub-account, and you can revoke it at any time from Hyperliquid's API page.
Can xToken value go down?
Yes. xTokens are not pegged stablecoins. Liminal's docs say their value can fall temporarily during long stretches of negative funding or when costs exceed returns.
Who audited Liminal?
Liminal's xToken contracts were audited by Spearbit and Pashov Audit Group. The reports are listed at docs.liminal.money/more/audits.
How do I get support from Liminal?
Only through a ticket in Liminal's Discord. Liminal's docs say the team never sends the first direct message, so treat any unsolicited DM as a scam.
