HLP, explained
The vault that lets anyone own a slice of the exchange's market making, and what that actually exposes you to.
HLP (Hyperliquidity Provider) is a community-owned protocol vault that market-makes on Hyperliquid, takes over backstop liquidations and accrues part of trading fees; depositors share its profit and loss. On 4 November 2026 it held about $151.6M, with all-time PnL of about $138.6M, and deposits are locked for 4 days.
On most exchanges, the profitable jobs (making markets and absorbing liquidations) belong to the exchange itself or to a handful of privileged firms. Hyperliquid packaged those jobs into a vault anyone can deposit into. That vault is HLP, the Hyperliquidity Provider.
An analogy: HLP is like owning a share of the exchange’s in-house trading desk. When the desk earns spreads and liquidation profits, you share them. When the desk ends up on the wrong side of a big move, you share that too.
What HLP does
According to Hyperliquid’s docs, HLP:
- Makes markets on Hyperliquid’s perps through several strategies, quoting bids and asks so traders can get filled.
- Performs backstop liquidations. When a trader’s account falls below two-thirds of maintenance margin and the order book couldn’t close it, HLP’s liquidator vault takes over the position. On average these takeovers are profitable, because the trader’s remaining maintenance margin goes with the position. See liquidation.
- Supplies USDC in Earn, Hyperliquid’s lending feature for portfolio-margin users.
- Accrues a portion of trading fees.
It is “community-owned”: there is no fee to the vault leader (leader commission is 0%), and the leader’s share of the vault was about 0.24% on 4 November 2026.
HLP by the numbers
Hyperliquid info API, vault 0xdfc2…f303, read 4 November 2026 07:30 UTC:
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Account value | ~$151.6M |
| All-time PnL | ~+$138.6M |
| 30-day PnL | ~+$94.5k |
| 7-day PnL | ~-$356k |
| 24-hour PnL | ~+$23.4k |
| Account value a week earlier | ~$174.3M |
| Sub-strategy vaults | 7 |
| Deposit lockup | 4 days |
| Leader commission | 0% |
Two things stand out. First, HLP has made money over its life, but week to week it swings both ways. Second, its size moves with deposits and withdrawals, not just PnL: the drop from ~$174M to ~$152M over the week was mostly money leaving, since the weekly PnL was only about -$0.36M.
HLP vs other vaults
Hyperliquid also lets any trader open a vault that others can follow. Those “legacy” HyperCore vaults are run by individuals who take a profit share, and the docs note they don’t support HIP-3 or spot. HLP is different: it’s a protocol vault with no profit share, run by the protocol’s own strategies. Newer vaults built on HyperEVM can use CoreWriter to trade on HyperCore with custom accounting.
Why it matters to you
- As a trader, HLP is often your counterparty and your safety net. Deep quotes and an orderly liquidation backstop exist partly because HLP has capital.
- As a depositor, you’re taking market-maker risk, not lending. There is no promised rate. Returns come from trading, so they can be negative.
- The 4-day lockup is real. If markets turn, you can’t pull your USDC out the same day you put it in.
What can go wrong
- Losses during violent moves. If HLP holds a large position taken over from liquidations and the market keeps moving, the vault loses.
- Manipulation of thin markets. On small, illiquid perps a large trader can push the price and leave the backstop holding a losing liquidated position. Validators can delist markets and change parameters, but thin markets are where HLP is most exposed.
- Concentration. One vault is the backstop for many markets. A failure in one strategy hits all depositors.
- No deposit insurance. If HLP loses, depositors bear it.

Questions people ask
Is HLP safe?
HLP has no fixed yield and can lose money. It is the counterparty in market making and backstop liquidations, so a sharp one-sided move or a manipulated market can produce losses. On 4 November 2026 its 7-day PnL was about -$356k while its all-time PnL was about +$138.6M.
What is the HLP lockup period?
4 days from your most recent deposit. If you deposit again, the 4-day clock restarts for withdrawal.
What is HLP's APR?
It varies with market conditions and is reported live in the Vaults tab. The API's annualized figure was about -0.09% on 4 November 2026 after a weak week; the 30-day PnL was about +$94.5k on a ~$150M vault. Past returns don't predict future ones.
Does HLP get all of Hyperliquid's fees?
No. Hyperliquid's docs say HLP accrues a portion of trading fees; most fees flow to the Assistance Fund, which converts them to HYPE, and to market deployers. HLP's returns come mainly from market making and liquidations.
How do I deposit into HLP?
Open the Vaults page on app.hyperliquid.xyz, select Hyperliquidity Provider (HLP), and deposit USDC from your perps balance. Our HLP vault guide walks through it step by step.
